    Five-Year Tsunami Report highlights goals reached in relief and recovery efforts

    The tragic events of December 26, 2004 caused destruction on an unprecedented scale. Nearly 230,000 people were killed - 160,000 in Indonesia’s Aceh Province alone - the majority of them women and children.  Communities were devastated, livelihoods destroyed, homes, schools and heath facilities washed away.  Yet the sheer scale of the Tsunami’s destruction – as well as the massive mobilization of resources received from international relief – provided many opportunities to restore basic services and build back better than before.     Five years on: rebuilding education in post-tsunami Banda Aceh

    The tsunami that ravaged parts of northern Indonesia in December 2004 claimed the lives of most of the other 300 pupils who were enrolled in school at the time. Now completely rebuilt, it is hard to believe that this school is at the centre of one of the worst hit parts of one of the worst affected territories around the Indian Ocean. More
     

    Five years on: safeguarding health in post-tsunami Banda Aceh

    Banda Aceh, Indonesia, December 2009 - Singing as loud as they are, one can make out the distinctive voices of Misrina and Bunga above the din of the other young children attending the health centre. Now approaching their fifth birthdays, both were born within a few weeks of the tsunami - Misrina was delivered by a Russian doctor in a hospital tent. More
     

    Five years on: strengthening protection of children in post-tsunami Banda Aceh

    In small groups they sit together and chat, or play games of soccer and volleyball, under the watchful eye of their social workers.  All of the residents have suffered from the recent conflict in Aceh, the trauma of the 2004 tsunami or have been rescued from violent family break-ups. More
