On his first birthday, Dekris’s weight dropped drastically to 6.5 kilograms. His mother had tried her best to provide nutritious food for Dekris; every day, he ate rice, moringa leaves, tempeh and tofu. Their dry land prevented Dekris’s parents from growing other types of vegetables. His father worked as a janitor in an office building, and his mother was doing everything she could for Dekris’s recovery.
Fortunately, Dekris and his mother received help at a local health centre which is part of UNICEF’s nutrition programme. Children like Dekris receive 8 weeks treatment of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), a nutrient-packed peanut paste, providing a quick and easy-to-digest nutrition boost even for weakened children. They can quickly gain weight and, eight weeks later, fully recover and can play again.
UNICEF assists local governments and health officers in providing nutritional therapy drugs, known as RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food). In addition, we raise awareness and educate parents and caregivers on good feeding practice for young infants to prevent malnutrition.
To continue helping children like Dekris survive, please continue to donate your YouGov points.
Please also consider starting monthly donation to become a “Pendekar Anak” (Hero for Children) and make a difference in the lives of the children who need it the most every month.
A child with severe acute malnutrition needs RUTF for eight weeks for a complete recovery. An IDR 550,000 donation/month (equivalent to around USD 36/month) can provide the medication for malnutrition for 1 month.
